What it is and how to maintain it

Comfort Plus Neutral glass

This typically has a thin, hard, and durable low-emissivity (Low-E) coating on the interior surface to improve thermal insulation and solar control.

This coated surface requires a slightly different cleaning approach than ordinary glass to ensure its longevity and performance.

Here's the best way to clean Comfort Plus Neutral glass, focusing on routine cleaning and general precautions:
Recommended Cleaning Solutions:* Vinegar and Water Mixture: This is highly recommended by manufacturers. Mix one part white vinegar with ten parts water. This solution is effective and helps prevent streaks.
 * Windex® Multi-Surface Cleaner (colourless liquid) or Mr. Muscle® Surface and Glass (clear liquid): These are also generally recommended for routine cleaning in Australia and New Zealand, respectively.
 * Commercially available vinegar-based glass cleaners: These typically provide a clean, streak-free surface.
Things to AVOID (Very Important for Coated Glass):
* Ammonia-based and alcohol-based glass cleaners: These products tend to leave visible streaks and are generally not recommended for Low-E coatings.
 * Razor blades, metal tools, scouring pads, steel wool, or any abrasive materials/metallic objects: These can scratch or damage the delicate coating.
 **Abrasive cleaners, powder-based cleaners, or cleaning agents containing hydrofluoric or phosphoric acid: These are corrosive and can stain or damage the glass surface.
 * Cleaning in direct sunlight or when the glass is hot: The cleaning solution can dry too quickly, leaving streaks and making it harder to achieve a clean finish.
 * Allowing cleaning solutions to contact the edges of laminated glass, insulating glass units, or mirrors: This can potentially damage the seals or the glass itself.
 * Extreme temperature changes: Do not splash hot water on cold glass or freezing water on hot glass, as this can lead to thermal fracture.
 * Tapes or adhesives: Some can stain or damage glass surfaces.
Routine Cleaning Procedure:
 * Preparation:
   * Remove any jewellery or watches to prevent accidental scratching of the glass surface.
   * Wear gloves if desired.
 * Apply Solution Generously:
   * Flood the glass surface generously with your chosen cleaning solution (vinegar and water, Windex, or a vinegar-based cleaner). You can spray it on or use a cloth saturated with the solution. Be ample with the amount applied.
 * Wipe and Scrub:
   * Use a clean, lint-free cloth or towel to gently scrub the wet surface.
   * Ensure the cloth is free of grit or debris to avoid scratching.
 * Dry for a Streak-Free Finish:
   * Immediately wipe dry with a separate, clean, dry, lint-free cloth or towel.
   * Crucially, stop wiping just before the glass completely dries. A uniform film of moisture will quickly evaporate, leaving a streak-free surface. If you wipe until it's completely dry, you may introduce streaks.
   * Do NOT use a squeegee on the coated (interior) surface as it can damage the coating.
 * Repeat if Necessary:
   * For heavily soiled glass or stubborn fingerprints, you may need to repeat the procedure a couple of times. Continue until you achieve the desired result.
General Tips for Best Results:
 * Clean on a cloudy day: This prevents the cleaning solution from drying too quickly, which helps avoid streaks.
 * Use distilled water: If you live in an area with hard water, distilled water can help prevent spots and streaks caused by mineral content.
 * Start at the top and work your way down: This ensures you don't drip dirty cleaning solution onto already cleaned areas.
 * Don't over-clean: Once the glass is clean, there's no need for excessive rubbing.
By following these guidelines, you can effectively clean your Comfort Plus Neutral glass and maintain its performance and appearance for years to come.
